20 of the Best Documentaries on the Art of Graphic Design

art of design documentary

Many of the castle’s incredible antiques and original artworks are featured on the show. And with three lakes, rolling hills, and 56 Lebanese cedars within the grounds, the show’s outdoor scenes are as enjoyable as those shot indoors, partly because it’s when you’re truly able to appreciate the exterior architecture of this grand home. A well-respected art dealer in England, Mould is most well known for being half of the detective team of the popular Fake or Fortune? In this new series of short videos, he takes viewers around his house and discusses the various works he has on display, including pieces by Cedric Morris and Vanessa Bell. But the real star of Art in Isolation is actually Duck End, his restored 17th-century manor house in Oxfordshire.

Eero Saarinen: The Architect Who Saw the Future

For the Decimal typeface, inspired by the lettering on wristwatches, viewers get a close-up look at primary sources, captured directly through the lens of a stereoscopic microscope. For Parliament, a visit to Green-Wood Cemetery involved a survey of inscriptional lettering — and captured a genuine, unscripted discovery on camera. Both projects involved research with secondary sources, one in Hoefler’s own reference library, the other at the map room of the New York Public Library, guided by the curator of one of the library’s most distinctive special collections. From issues such as missing “soul” to a lack of a “big idea” and emotional connection with viewers, this video will help designers address their potential shortcomings and explore the ways they can take their design skills to the next level. In this Netflix-produced documentary, Paula Scher talks about graphic design and the importance of typography in conveying messages through design.

Ilse Crawford: Interior Design

The book has 43 chapters, each one dedicated to a single artist, and their process of creating a single work. There are poets, painters, chefs, sand castle sculptors and crossword puzzle makers. He describes his photography as “arranging chaos”, whether we’re looking at street scenes with kids playing or feminists protesting, or celebrities bringing that same disruptive energy to hotel room photo shoots. According to the “Yes I’m a Designer” channel’s recent video, these are some of the hottest graphic design trends for the year 2022. In this 6-minute video, he breaks down some of the advice he’s found to be helpful. This documentary tells the story of the journey to ubiquitous  3D printing and what it means for the world of design.

"A shoot with General Colin Powell provides a window into his process." "His award-winning designs have steered the brand into the future with a sleek new sports cars and a self-driving electric van," said Netflix. "Over the last two decades of working, one of the things I've discovered is that often, things are made to fill voids," said Devlin to open the episode. Season one was released in 2017, with season two following in 2019 – this series is not yet available on Youtube.

The show had enormous influence on interior design while it was on air, and the buzz has yet to wear off. In fact, many designers report that they still field requests for offices and lairs in the spirit of Don Draper—whose sharp TV penthouse features exact replicas of the Danish modern design style made famous by designers like Knoll, Miller, and Thayer Coggin. This documentary by Bayonet Media explores the modern printers and graphic designers working to preserve this historic craft.

Each image is accompanied by a quote from Sillman, explaining what step that particular draft represented in her process. The chapter contains 39 images, demonstrating the full evolution from first draft to finished product of her work, Miss Gleason. In one chapter, Moss speaks with Amy Sillman, an abstract painter who Moss admires for her unique use of color and shape. When Adam Moss gave up his job as editor-in-chief of New York Magazine five years ago, he started painting. “Another building’s blocking the view of the Empire State,” says Hamilton, describing the shifts.

Running at 1 hour 45 minutes, the film makes you really think, especially about what creative legacy you might leave yourself. It's important to note that this documentary, which runs to 1 hour 18 minutes,  doesn't actually talk about the use of minimalism in graphic design. But it will help you reach a deeper understanding of where the minimalism trend comes from and why it has a cultural resonance in today's society. "Paula Scher paints with words as an American graphic designer, artist, and educator," said Netflix. "For more than three decades she has been at the forefront of graphic design and developed identities for esteemed institutions such as The Public Theater in NY, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Target, Bloomberg, and Microsoft." This episode focuses on how graphic designer Scher, the first female principal at Pentagram, shaped the face of New York.

But life was far from easy for an African American working at a time when racism was entrenched in American life—this is the story of how Williams persevered by dint of his sheer talent and determination. Shot in 80 scene-stealing locations throughout Paris, this quirky visual masterpiece was named the one of the best shot movies of the decade by American Cinematographer magazine, and offers a chance to revel in the architecture of the French capital. The plot centers on a young woman, played by Audrey Tautou, who is determined to bring happiness and cheer to whomever she meets, despite her rocky past, and predominantly takes place in the Montmartre neighborhood. Look out for Rue Lepic—a picture-perfect, ancient street filled with butcher shops, flower stands, and quintessential French brasseries—which features as Amélie’s daily runway. “This is James Stewart in Rear Window,” says director Wes Anderson, when recalling his first impression of Hamilton, and his apartment, in Uncropped, the documentary he executive-produces.

Sometimes great ideas happen when you stop thinking and let the creativity flow naturally through feelings and based on your past encounters, experiences, and references. As a titan in the industry of marketing design, Michael Bierut has worked with brands and clients like Saks Fifth Avenue, The New York Times, various museums, and major city projects. In this documentary, he shows us how each individual project utilizes different aspects of design theory and imagination. Brilliant design is about creating work that blends seamlessly into the medium or environment AND jumps out (just enough) to grab our attention. Part collaborative space, part play space, part educational space, part local hangout, the Lego House in Billund, Denmark, is a whimsical, futuristic edifice meant to inspire and awe. Some of its many unusual features include the Tree of Creativity—made of 6.3 million Lego bricks!

"I really wanted to be good, and it made the act of making art so frustrating for me," said Moss. "This [studio] is where I come many days and wrestle with trying to make something." Hoefler’s storyboards demonstrating typographic principles, for the episode’s These Are Letters! It’s always useful to understand the logic and principles behind color, composition, shape, and balance. Letters are powerful signs in a world where designers are tasked with conveying complex messages as quickly as possible.

This particular segment explains the basics of color theory in graphic design. This short animated film was created using CGI and 3D animation technology by students at Motion Design School. It’s an adorable depiction of how designers interact with the world around them and draw (pun intended) inspiration from the most random sources.

In fact, the movie’s Birdcage Club is actually The Carlyle hotel. With a 1939 façade that is still virtually untouched, this building is one of the most celebrated Art Deco landmarks on Ocean Drive, South Beach’s main thoroughfare. Today, socially distanced walking tours are led by the Miami Design Preservation League for those who want to take a closer look. For Rostam, the creative process occurred in large part on his iPhone, in a collection of draft lyrics written in the notes app, and melodies in recorded as voice memos.

Many graphic designers like to describe their work as "edgy" and "risky". Well, just to put that in perspective, here's the captivating story of someone who really does risk everything for their work. The series follows eight leading designers operating in different industries. There are episodes dedicated to Ingels, Devlin and Crawford, as well as graphic designer Paula Scher, automobile designer Ralph Gilles, Nike shoe designer Tinker Hatfield, illustrator Christoph Niemann and photographer Platon. This beloved series chronicles the fictional Crawley family’s lavish lives inside Downton Abbey, a sprawling English estate. In real life, the 300-room property is Highclere Castle, located in Berkshire, England, which has been owned by the Carnarvon family since 1679.

From prosthetic limbs and controversial weapons to architecture and marketing, the possibilities of 3D printing for design are endless. Niels Bolbrinker and Thomas Tielsch’s documentary examines how the Bauhaus movement changed the way we look at design. With the backdrop of the World Wars, it introduced a bold style of work that was ahead of its time. The Bauhaus movement had a tremendous impact on every corner of the art world. From the things we buy and magazines to animation and street signs, design is everywhere.

In doing so, this series goes beyond the superficial and really digs into how toys are conceived, designed and made. In 1956, he became Disney's first-ever African-American animator. Then after founder Walt Disney's death, he left to start his own company, which produced black history films for high schools.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan cautioned that even as new U.S. aid flows into Ukraine, it’s possible that Russia will continue to make tactical gains in the weeks ahead. Still, longer term, it remains uncertain if Ukraine, after months of losses and massive damage to its infrastructure, can make enough progress to sustain American political support before burning through the latest influx of money. The $61 billion can help triage Ukrainian forces, but Kyiv will need much more for a fight that could last years, military experts say.

Meanwhile, Ukraine for the first time has begun using long-range ballistic missiles provided secretly by the United States, bombing a Russian military airfield in Crimea last week and Russian forces in another occupied area overnight, American officials confirmed Wednesday. The U.S. is providing more of the Army Tactical Missile System, known as ATACMS, in the new military package, according to one official who was not authorized to comment and spoke on the condition of anonymity. For instance, administration officials at the speaker’s request briefed Reps. Chip Roy, R-Texas, and Ralph Norman, R-S.C., two conservatives who were persistent antagonists of Johnson. By late October, Republicans finally settled on Johnson, a low-profile Louisiana Republican whose thinking on Ukraine was opaque, to serve as the next speaker.

Biden during his congratulatory call with Johnson urged him to quickly pass Ukraine aid and began a monthslong, largely behind-the-scenes effort to bring the matter to a vote. Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has complained that European allies have not done enough for Ukraine. While the former president stopped short of endorsing the funding package, his tone has shifted in recent days, acknowledging that Ukraine’s survival is important to the United States. Tucked into the measure is a provision that gives TikTok’s Beijing-based parent company, ByteDance, nine months to sell it or face a nationwide prohibition in the United States.

Biden immediately approved sending Ukraine $1 billion in military assistance, the first installment from about $61 billion allocated for Ukraine. The package includes air defense capabilities, artillery rounds, armored vehicles and other weapons to shore up Ukrainian forces who have seen morale sink as Russian President Vladimir Putin has racked up win after win. But significant damage has been done to the Biden administration’s effort to help Ukraine repel Russia’s invasion during the funding impasse that dates back to August, when the Democratic president made his first emergency spending request for Ukraine. Even with a burst of new weapons and ammunition, it’s unlikely Ukraine will immediately recover after months of setbacks. Biden lamented that the package did not include money to bolster U.S. border security.

The White House had proposed including in the package provisions it said would have helped stem the tide of migrants and asylum seekers coming to the U.S. Republicans, however, rejected the proposal at the urging of Trump, who did not want to give Biden the win on an issue that’s been an albatross for the Democratic administration. Far-right Republicans have adamantly opposed sending more money for Ukraine, with the war appearing to have no end in sight. Biden in August requested more than $20 billion to keep aid flowing into Ukraine, but the money was stripped out of a must-pass spending bill.

In public, the administration deployed a strategy of downgrading intelligence that demonstrated Russia’s efforts to tighten its ties with U.S. adversaries China, North Korea and Iran to fortify Moscow’s defense industrial complex and get around U.S. and European sanctions. In a daily meeting convened by White House chief of staff Jeff Zients, the president’s top aides would brainstorm possible ways to better make the case about Ukraine’s dire situation in the absence of aid. At frustrating moments during the negotiations, Biden urged his aides to “just keep talking, keep working,” according to a senior administration official, who insisted on anonymity to discuss internal discussions.

REAL ESTATE NEWS

In private conversations with Johnson, Biden and White House officials leaned into the stakes for Europe if Ukraine were to fall to Russia. On explicit orders from Biden, White House officials also avoided directly attacking Johnson over the stalled aid. At the time, the House was in chaos because the Republican majority had been unable to select a speaker to replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., who had been ousted weeks earlier at the urging of restive legislators on the right.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg quickly called out Trump for putting “American and European soldiers at increased risk.” But in reality, the White House maneuvering to win additional funding for Ukraine started months earlier. Many European leaders have long been nervous that a second Trump term would mean decreased U.S. support for Ukraine and NATO. The European anxiety was heightened in February when Trump in a campaign speech warned NATO allies that he “would encourage” Russia to “do whatever the hell they want” to countries that don’t meet defense spending goals if he returns to the White House.

The administration and a bipartisan group of lawmakers have called the social media site a growing national security concern, which ByteDance denies. “The fact is that it’s going to take some time for us to dig out of the hole that was created by six months of delay,” he said. The Senate has passed $95 billion in war aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, sending the legislation to President Joe Biden after months of delays and debate over how involved the United States should be in foreign wars.

The genesis of the film was a chance meeting between Bumgarner and Ellis’ mother in 2018 and getting to know Ellis, who was open with Bumgarner and Seiler about her struggles with substance use. The film traces the deep bond between family members and their remarkable strength as they faced the turbulence and despair of addiction. “Picture Proof” aims to honor Ellis’ life and connect with others who can relate to struggles with addiction, recovery and loss. "They all have a compulsion, an obsession to make something. It gets into their system and they can't let go of it," Moss said, explaining that the vision or the final product is secondary to the process.

Netflix has become the go-to-source for all things entertainment related — regardless if you're a viewer who prefers Michael Bay-style spectacles — or more low-key affairs which explore the human condition. If you happen to fall into the latter category, the art documentaries on Netflix are an excellent escape. Not only do they tune out the events of the work day, but they can also aid in one's own attempt to get in touch with their creativity. The fact that you probably don't know anything about Dorfman makes the story of her life all the more compelling, and Morris brings it all together in a way that keeps up the pace and remains captivating throughout its one hour 16 minute length.

The season's third episode focuses on British set designer Devlin, who has designed stages for artists including Beyoncé, Kanye West and U2. One of the world’s most respected art dealers, Philip Mould is perhaps best known for being the star of BBC’s Fake or Fortune? But in this series of short movies, he takes viewers on a tour of the glorious architecture of Duck End—the restored 17th-century manor house in Oxfordshire, England, which he shares with his wife Catherine.

The only problem is that there's such a huge amount of content on Netflix (much of it mundane) that the best stuff can get lost in the mix. So we've done the work for you and unearthed the best creative documentaries available to watch on the world's favourite streaming platform right now. The season concludes with an episode focused on British designer Crawford. British portrait and documentary photographer Planton is the focus of this season's penultimate episode.

"Interior designer Ilse Crawford creates spaces and objects that engage the sense and promote well- being, from high-end hotels to IKEA furniture," said Netflix. "As founder of Studioilse, she brings her philosophy to life, along with her multidisciplinary team, by designing furniture and products that support and enhance human behaviour and actions in everyday life." Disney cruise food: The ultimate guide to restaurants and dining on board

If you bring your bucket back to Preludes, you can enjoy discounted popcorn refills throughout your cruise. Buckets that are brought on board from other cruises or from a Disney Park are not available for refills at the discounted price. One of my favorite things about a cruise is the unlimited soft serve ice cream. At Eye Scream Treats, you can get as many ice cream cones or cups as you want throughout your sailing.

On some ships, you will be assigned to a specific main dining room; other ships, such as Norwegian Cruise Line's fleet, will offer a couple and you can choose which one to go to on any given evening. Viking commands attention on all waters, with riverboats, ocean liners, and expedition ships plying every continent. So many touches sum up Viking’s willingness for menus to reflect itineraries, and regional dishes and wines are a given. Flourishing herb gardens allow riverboat chefs to pluck the freshest herbs to grace dishes daily. On ocean-going vessels, specialty restaurant Manfredi’s excels in Italian cuisine (bistecca alla Fiorentina is legendary), and Mamsen’s triumphs the line’s Nordic heritage — all bow to the signature waffles. Windstar’s masted ships cut a romantic silhouette, and lend a feeling of timelessness and adventure to every cruise.

Have your pick of all the best restaurants and dining option when planning a cruise vacation onboard the award-winning Ovation of the Seas. After a night living it up on deck, there’s nothing more satisfying than a great slice of pizza — and Sorrento’s serves up the best at sea even after all the bars have closed. If you’re a traditionalist, go for a slice of classic cheese or Margherita. Or mix things up with a specialty pie, like the bacon and BBQ-infused Caribbean Dream.

Beyond dining, the hands-on cooking school and Regent’s chef-led Epicurean Explorer Tours are part of the draw. Passengers may market-shop for a paella cooking class and feast on the famed rice-based dish at a seaside eatery in Valencia, Spain. This luxe line debuted modern Mediterranean restaurant Solis on Seabourn Quest as an inspired replacement to Thomas Keller’s Grill, before Seabourn Encore, Ovation, and Sojourn rollouts. Seabourn restaurants may differ stylistically fleetwide, yet never vary in quality. Exemplary venues include Sushi for primo fish; the Restaurant with intricate entrees like carved lamb loin with crisp lamb spring roll; and Earth & Ocean for fine dining al fresco. Consider complimentary caviar and 24-hour in-suite service as bonuses.

Now, she helps over 1 million people per month to plan their perfect cruise holidays. If you may fancy something different for an additional cost, there are plenty of speciality restaurants, such as Chops Grille or Jamie Oliver’s Jamie’s Italian restaurant. You may think that Disney Cruise Line’s food may be just the typical food you get at a Disney theme park.

An impressive array of complimentary restaurants can also be found on this cruise ship, which is the largest in the fleet. HAL really rolls out the red carpet for gourmets, and its Chef’s Table on Nieuw Amsterdam is a little piece of luxury that won’t break the bank. You’ll be treated to a seven-course meal designed by Master Chef Rudi Sodamin built from decadent ingredients like lobster and truffles. High-quality bottles of wine accompany this epicurean dream, and it’s all served on the ship’s best china. This is a great option for food and wine lovers who aren’t on a cruise to lose weight, as seven courses of rich food will probably leave you sated but a couple pounds heavier.

The menus are typically set menus and do not change based on the host venue. On disembarkation day, your family will dine in the final restaurant of your set rotation, whether you ate dinner there or not. Celebrity Cruises offers you a modern luxury dining experience where menus are as inventive as they are diverse. The Compass Rose, the ship’s main dining room, offers a diverse menu that changes daily, ensuring that every meal is a new discovery. However, you can also enjoy culinary classic at its many different restaurants, which are famous for offering the most al fresco dining at sea.

Lovingly dedicated to "Mamsen" Ragnhild Hagen, the mother of Viking's founder, the cheerful cafe serves up casual Scandinavian-inspired fare (think waffles, split pea soup, and open-faced sandwiches). Is drifting down the Danube River your style, or would you rather roam the icy waters of Antarctica? But one thing that’s historically been an afterthought rather than a priority, however, is food. The pioneer of ultra-luxury cruises on small ships, Seabourn Cruise Line takes vacationers all over the world. The all-inclusive cruises give the feel of a floating resort, where relaxation is the name of the game.

Viking Cruises: What to Eat and Drink on Board

cruise with best food

While the old days of exceptional gourmet dining are long gone there are newer lines that have, pardon the pun, gone overboard, with fine dining and alternative options. Celebrity and Cunard are good mass market lines with better than average dining options. Windstar, Oceania and Azamara are very good small ship boutique lines with exceptional dining options. Then you have the luxury lines…Seabourn, Regent, Silversea and Crystal are top notch with Regent winning that race by a nose. Then you have the Yacht Club on MSC…which is a mass market line with a ship within a ship concept. The YC is an excellent product for those who don’t want to give up the big ship experience but want an upscale experience on a mass market line.

At the same restaurant, I loved the chocolate, caramel tacos.

At the buffet, a crew member may be assigned to show you which items should be avoided. Some cruise lines will offer hosted tables for solo travelers, especially on luxury lines where dining is always flexible. These lines may even employ gentleman hosts to guide the conversation and make sure everyone feels welcome and included. Inquire with guest services or the maitre d' and they can get you sorted.

PALATE PLEASING CULINARY CRUSADE

Global Tastemakers is a celebration of the best culinary destinations in the U.S. and abroad. We asked more than 180 food and travel journalists to vote on their favorites, including restaurants and bars, cities, hotels, airports, airlines, and cruises. We then entrusted those results to an expert panel of judges to determine each category’s winners. In many categories, we’ve included a Plus One, hand-selected by our expert panel, to shout out more culinary destinations we don’t want our readers to miss.

I tried the newest ships from Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Norwegian. Here’s how they compare

Onboard restaurants can match land-based eateries in sophistication and style, with chefs as driven by seasonal ingredients as their peers ashore. The 2024 Global Tastemakers, selected by food and travel journalists this year, favor luxury ocean lines, which invest heavily in food and wine, yet also embrace expedition ships and riverboats. All operate small vessels by today’s standards; kitchen crews can more readily cook with artistry and ingenuity for fewer passengers. Norwegian’s focus on “freestyle cruising” definitely extends to the line’s approach to dining.

What is open dining vs. set seating on a cruise?

The meal starts with your hosts, Ant-Man and the Wasp, explaining what the interactive quantum core on your table is for. Then, throughout the meal, you'll work with Marvel superheroes to save the ship from an impending villain. "Beauty and the Beast" fans will love dining in the restaurant named after the candelabra in the film.

The Sushi Bar is complimentary, but seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Every Crystal passenger enjoys one complimentary dinner at Umi Uma, during which you can order off the sushi menu. The Restaurant, the main dining venue on Seabourn ships, offers a variety of gourmet options in an open-seating arrangement, allowing guests to dine whenever they wish.

Berlin for Oktoberfest: What To Know Before You Go Royal Caribbean Cruises

My burger tasted freshly made and of high-quality, something I’d find at a restaurant. It was definitely higher quality than anything you'd find at a fast food restaurant. The fries were nicely seasoned too, although not as hot as I’d like them. I only wish the menu was easier to understand for making quicker, better informed decisions with fewer acronyms. This was one of my favorite spots last time I cruised; so, on our first sea day, I decided to have this for lunch. Last summer, I sailed the Mediterranean Sea for seven days on a luxury Virgin Voyages cruise ship.

That way you don’t have to worry about anything once you’re on the sea and you're not expected to have any nasty surprises when it comes to dining on a cruise. In general, you can expect that on most cruise ships fantastic food will be served. However, there are some ships that stand out, which is why we broke down the Cruise ships with the best food for you and your special preferences. These dining venues are included in the cost of the cruise yet may require reservations for dinner. You’ll have the freedom to savor gourmet meals across multiple venues without worrying about the bill. This often includes main dining rooms, buffets, and sometimes even specialty restaurants.

It’s worth noting that many specialty restaurants offer discounted rates for children so that the whole family can enjoy the treat. Speaking of treats, make sure to try the fantastic gelato at the ice cream parlor. Another one of my favorite cruise ship restaurants is Pacific Rim, found on the two largest Regent Seven Seas Cruises vessels.

If you don't have a sea day on your itinerary, brunch might be served on a port day. On a recent cruise, I made a reservation for brunch at Palo when the ship was docked in Nassau, Bahamas. From the oldest Disney ship, Disney Magic, to the newest, Disney Wish, the cruise line has continued to raise the bar when it comes to dining on a cruise ship. One thing that makes Disney cruise dining stand out among its competitors is the line's rotational dining program. Throughout a sailing, guests rotate dinners through three main Disney cruise restaurants, and their service team moves with them.

Located in the Lido Buffet next to Carnival Deli, Pizza Pirate serves up small, hand-tossed pizzas. This pizza parlor is open 24 hours, so it’s very popular at night when guests have late-night munchies. Since it was so expensive for one drink ($17 after tip) and I didn’t have a drink package, I didn’t make another trip back to the bar. Hopefully on a future Carnival cruise, I can sample some of the other delicious sounding cocktails. The small tacos, served on flour tortillas, reminded me of street tacos.

Despite its name, Royal Caribbean goes far beyond the Caribbean, with sailings to Alaska, Hawaii, the Mediterranean, Asia, and Canada. The massive ships have a suitably huge variety of onboard dining options. Highlights include Jamie’s Italian by Jamie Oliver, meat and seafood grilled right before your eyes at Teppanyaki, modern American at 150 Central Park, and a globally-inspired buffet at Windjammer. There are plenty of kid-friendly options, like Johnny Rocket’s, as well as bars like a Latin-themed club with a live band playing salsa, merengue, samba, and cumbia. Celebrity positions itself as a relaxed luxury resort at sea, with entertainment, pools, a spa, and diverse drinking and dining outlets.

Outside on the pool deck of Disney Magic, Duck-In Diner dishes out lunch and snacks to hungry cruisers. The menu here is a fun mix of American favorites like burgers and dogs, plus Middle Eastern-inspired shawarma wrapped in a warm pita. I love the shawarma because you can see it rotating on a vertical spit right behind the counter and load up your sandwich with your favorite toppings.

Holland America offers flexible dining options or reserved seating, depending on your preference. The cruise line has just over a dozen restaurants and features a mix of included and specialty venues on each ship. Several lines have done away with the assigned dining concept, most notably luxury lines such as Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea and Seabourn, but also brands such as Norwegian Cruise Line and Virgin Voyages. The ships in these lines offer multiple onboard dining venues where you either make a reservation or try your luck as a walk-in, as you would at any land-based restaurants. Most will have one main dining room venue that is larger and does not require reservations or extra fees to eat there.

Given their venues’ relaxed elegance and gourmet menu options, there’s so much to love. We're talking about miso-glazed sea bass wrapped in a hoba leaf, and sole tempura with an orange ponzu sauce and spicy daikon. While it's easy to rack up a $150 per person bill at a Nobu on land (a single piece of toro sushi costs $17 at Nobu New York Fifty Seven), a night at Umi Uma on a Crystal ship is included in the fare.

Port Canaverals fire-damaged Carnival ship finally gets its replacement whale tail

carnival cruise fire 2023

In May of 2022, Carnival Freedom‘s funnel caught fire while the ship was docked at the Grand Turk Cruise Center. “The Captain has made multiple announcements to guests and crew and advised all but essential safety personnel to stay away from balconies and all open decks. A Carnival cruise ship that set sail from Port Canaveral in Florida caught fire on Thursday.

Latest Updates After Fire Breaks Out on Carnival Cruise Ship

The ship’s last dry dock was in 2019, but headed in early to get its replacement funnel. While the cause of the fire is still being investigated, Carnival noted in a post on X Saturday that eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike. Cruise Radio prioritizes well-balanced cruise news coverage and accurate reporting, paired with ship reviews and tips. The unfolding situation is eerily familiar to a scenario that unfolded nearly two years ago.

There were some changes to the itinerary, however, because ofthe fire and weather. The current situation was inherently more dangerous because the ship was at sea with all her passengers and crew on board. When the funnel caught fire in 2022, many passengers were ashore, greatly reducing the risk of passenger or crew harm. By early evening, the Captain had announced that passengers had reported seeing the funnel hit by lightning but added that this was not confirmed. While details are still unfolding, a statement from Carnival Cruise Line — as well as eyewitness reports provided to Cruise Radio — indicate that a lightning strike may have caused the Carnival Freedom fire.

A Carnival cruise ship caught fire as it was docked in Grand Turk on Thursday morning, officials said. It wasn’t until it left for the Navantia shipyard in Cadiz, Spain, in September that it would undergo a 16-day dry dock that would give the ship a new funnel often referred to as the “whale tail” because of its winged shape. “And I want to add my apologies and my assurances that when you rebook using your full refund and your 100% future cruise credit, that the crew will be standing by to give you all the Fun you deserve,” he added.

Second Funnel Fire for Carnival Freedom

Friday's five-night sailing also was scheduled to stop at those two ports of call, but in reverse order. On Saturday evening, "Carnival Freedom guests enjoyed the Elegant Night dinner as planned, and, with the exception of the open decks, all areas of the ship are fully functioning," Carnival said in its statement. Carnival said it made the decision after "our technical team completed a thorough assessment" during the ship’s visit Sunday to Freeport in the Bahamas. Damage to the funnel will require the cancellation of Carnival's next two cruises out of Port Canaveral, which were scheduled to depart Monday and Friday. Carnival Cruise Line is also reassuring passengers that the ship’s next voyage, a 5-night Eastern Caribbean cruise departing on March 25 with calls to Amber Cove and Grand Turk, is still planned to set sail on schedule. Firefighterswere able to control the blaze in about two hours and there were no reportedmajor injuries.

The Freedom ship will be taken to Freeport for a "repair to the funnel," Carnival said. All guests impacted by the changes in upcoming trips have been notified. The ship first had a day at sea on Tuesday and visited Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic on Wednesday.

To 4 p.m., and is scheduled for another day at sea before returning to Port Canaveral on Saturday, May 28. The fire was contained after about 20 minutes, but took somewhat longer to fully extinguish. Emergency personnel will continue to assess the ship to determine the cause of the fire, as well as to ensure the safety of the vessel. That incident led to passengers being transferred to Carnival Conquest, which had to cancel its scheduled cruise to accommodate the change. Heavy-duty machinery and shipyard workers were atop the funnel throughout the week, prepping for the smokestack redesign. The ship was about 20 miles off Eleuthera Island, Bahamas, when the fire broke out.

There were about 3,700 passengers onboard the ship when the fire occured. And the two upcoming sailings, which were canceled, likely would have had a similar passenger count amid the busy Spring Break season. The 110,000-gross-ton, Conquest-class Carnival Freedom can welcome 2,980 passengers aboard, and is also home to roughly 1,150 international crew members. The ship is homeported year-round from Port Canaveral, offering a variety of 4-night Bahamas and 5-night Eastern Caribbean cruises, perfect for quick getaways. In a letter sent to guests booked on the next sailing of Carnival Freedom, Carnival Cruise Line has provided an update to the ship’s condition and operation following a fire that damages the port side wing of the ship’s funnel. Freedom has been sailing without the iconic red-white-and-blue smokestack funnel since it became engulfed in flames in May 2022 while docked in Grand Turk.

It should be noted that the ship’s funnel is an exhaust vent and it is possible for the vessel to run safely without the characteristic “wings” that make Carnival cruise ships so distinctive. Mardi Gras, which arrived in port just before Carnival Freedom, experienced no delays with its own schedule for guests to debark and visit the port. No other cruise ships are visiting Grand Turk today, and the fire caused no damage to port facilities. Carnival Freedom experienced a fire in the starboard “wing” of its iconic whale-tale funnel while the ship was docked in Grand Turk on Thursday, May 26, 2022. No injuries have been reported, and the fire has been successfully extinguished. The ship’s captain kept all passengers onboard informed during the emergency with multiple announcements over the public PA system.

The call to Freeport is now planned for Sunday, March 24, and the ship will return on schedule to her homeport, Port Canaveral, on Monday, March 25. Carnival offers the most sailings from Port Canaveral with four ships offering a projected 270 homeport calls in the next year sailing year-round on a variety of itineraries. Freedom rejoins, Mardi Gras, Carnival Vista and Carnival Liberty, although Liberty will be switched during the year with Carnival Glory. One of the cruise’s passengers, Heath Barnes, posted footage of the incident on Facebook Saturday afternoon.

"The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames," an earlier Carnival statement said. "Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike, and that is being investigated, but cannot yet be confirmed." Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry. Since the start, it's been our aim to provide the latest cruise news covering all the major cruise lines.

Along with the ship’s firefighting team, the captain brought the ship into an area of heavy rain bands to help extinguish the fire, which was successful. Carnival Freedom has canceled several upcoming sailings because of a fire in its funnel, the second in the last two years. Witnesses reported the ship may have been struck by lightning, but that has not been confirmed, and the cause is still being investigated, according to the cruise line. This marks the second occurrence of a fire originating from the ship's exhaust funnel during a voyage.
